Standards Australia have today published a new electrical safety product standard covering information technology equipment, audio visual equipment and their accessories including external power supplies.

The standard is technology agnostic and performance-based, rather than based on prescribed constructions as is the case with the standards it replaces.  The AS/NZS version is an adoption of IEC 62368-1 with Australian deviations and uses Hazard Based Safety Engineering (HBSE), which evaluates hazards that can be transferred to end users and how technology products safeguard against these potential dangers.

Companies looking to sell products in Australia and to Europe for CE marking for the Low Voltage Directive or the North American market, should aim for compliance to AS/NZS 62368.1:2018 with relevant country/group deviations.  Austest Labs is the only IECEE CB lab in Australia and is able to issue accredited CB reports to IEC 62368-1.

The Standard is available for purchase from the SAI Global website.
