Copper Clad Aluminium Cable, ACMA Requirements
We have received enquiries about the potential to use copper clad aluminium (CCA) cable for fixed wiring (building) or Cat5 or Cat 6 patch cords. This is because CCA is substantially cheaper than straight copper.
The relevant ACMA standard for cable and cabling products is AS/CA S008:2010. Under clause 5.6.6.1, copper clad aluminium can only be used as an inner conductor in coaxial cable and must had a diameter of greater than 2mm (5.6.6.1.(b)).
All other metallic conductors must be either plain copper or plated copper. (Clause 5.6.6.1.(1)).
CCA cannot be used as Cat5 or 6 building cable, patch cords or cordage. CCA can only be used as coaxial cable.
The ACMA compliance area is monitoring this as they are aware of instances of CCA being used contrary to AS/CA S008.
Austest Labs Sydney and Melbourne are accredited for testing to AS/CA S008. Please submit enquiries via our contact page.
