Austest Labs has added the following electrical standard to our accreditation:

  • IEC 62368-1 Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment – Part 1: Safety requirements

This is a relatively new safety standard for Information Technology Equipment and Audio/Video Equipment and is intended to replace IEC 60950-1 and IEC 60065.  The standard is technology-neutral and performance-based, rather than based on prescribed constructions as is the case with the standards it replaces.  IEC 62368-1 uses Hazard Based Safety Engineering (HBSE), which evaluates hazards that can be transferred to end users and how technology products safeguard against these potential dangers.

The standard is yet to be adopted in Australia as a replacement for AS/NZS 60950.1 or AS/NZS 60065.  Companies looking to sell products into Europe for CE marking or the North American market, should aim for compliance to IEC 62368-1.
