Teething Necklace Safety
Teething Necklaces ( typically silicon) are unlikely to pass the toy standard AS/NZS ISO 8124.1 clause 4.5.1 (Squeeze toys, rattles and certain other toys).
Regardless of any labelling attached to a teething necklace warning of associated risks, the marketing of a necklace as suitable for a child to play with, raises concern as to the foreseeable misuse of the product, potentially leading to choking or strangulation.
Necklaces such as the one shown below, fail AS/NZS ISO 8124.1 due to the ability of the beads to pass thru the test aperture, which simulates a baby’s mouth opening.
Products may breach Consumer Protection Notice No. 14 of 2003 – Consumer Product Safety Standard: Toys for children up to and including 36 months of age as amended by Consumer Protection Notice No. 1 of 2005.
