Australian standard AS/NZS 60335.2.6:2014 supersedes AS/NZS 60335.2.6:2008 on 28 November 2017. Under the NSW Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2004 (the Act) all declared articles must comply with the current version of the class specification for the electrical article. This means that declared electrical ovens sold must comply with AS/NZS 60335.2.6:2014.

The new standard introduces significantly stronger requirements for the temperature rise limits for accessible surfaces of ovens.  Evidence obtained by NSW Fair Trading indicates that electrical ovens that are fully compliant to AS/NZS 60335.2.6:2008 may pose an unacceptable risk of burns when contact is made to accessible areas. In light of this evidence, NSW Fair Trading is unwilling to exempt such ovens from the requirements of the new standard.

A transitional measure permits persons selling ovens to be exempt from the requirements of table 102 of AS/NZS 60335.2.6:2014 as long as they are compliant with table 103 of AS/NZS 60335.2.6:2014. The order expires on 30 June 2018. After this date, all declared electrical ovens sold in NSW must fully comply with AS/NZS 60335.2.6:2014.

It is the responsibility of all persons selling declared electrical ovens to ensure products are fully compliant to the version of the standard (excepting the above interim dispensation).
